Spring Break When You Are Spring Broke

Spring Break When You Are Spring Broke

As a college student myself, I know how hard it can be to plan a spring break with minimal funds.

After four years of spring break planning, I still have not mastered the perfect spring break plan, but I have learned a lot along the way. To help you get started, I have conjured up the best places to go with affordable prices.

For the Beach Peeps

My friends and I always went to the beach for spring break, so this is my specialty. My best piece of advice is to use VRBO or Airbnb to search for places to stay and go from there.

A few places we went are Destin, Florida, Orange Beach, Alabama, and Seaside, Florida. These were affordable, because we were able to drive and split gas, whereas a plane ticket would have been much more costly. Another great thing about driving is you spend much less on transportation.

For the Snow Shredders

Unfortunately, unless you want to spend over fifteen hours in the car, there really is nowhere great to ski within driving range. Although, the flights to Denver and Park City aren’t too expensive.

Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain in North Carolina have many ski resorts and are cheaper options than Colorado because you can drive, but you get what you pay for. The mountains are much smaller and have a much shorter ski season.

For the Cruisers

There are TONS of cheap options if you are interested in going on a cruise, as long as you’re okay with being crammed into a small closet for a room and don’t suffer from claustrophobia!

Cruises are be fun because you go to multiple different places, and you can choose between a tropical cruise, European cruise, northern cruise, and more! You can also opt to go on half-week cruises to make it even cheaper.

For the Roadtrippers

This one might take quite a bit of planning, but if that's your forte, I say go for it. I’ve been on many road trips to visit family and friends. I have personally never taken a road trip just for the road trip, but it would be an awesome way to travel long distances while ballin’ on a budget.

One of my high school friends rented an RV with her friends during spring break. They traveled to the Grand Canyon and back, stopping at cool sightseeing and famous locations along the way. It was a great way for them to be able to make multiple different stops without coordinating different hotels and multiple flights.

For the Mountain Folks

I have always been a beach girl, but I recently took a trip to the mountains for a wedding, and it was beautiful. The mountains I went to happened to be in Colorado, but there are so many options.

The Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina are great places to visit with fun activities. There are many cool cities within driving distance like Gatlinburg, Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Asheville, Boone, Dahlonega, and more! All of these cities have Vrbo and Airbnb to accommodate your budget.

Of course, spending spring break in Auburn or going back to your hometown is awesome, too. I always liked going somewhere fun with friends for half the week, then spend the other half at home.

Wherever you go, remember to stay safe, hydrate, pack accordingly, and

Be Well, Auburn.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and raised in Roswell, Georgia, Avery is a senior studying Communications and minoring in Marketing. She chose Auburn because of its southern charm, but mainly because her big brother was here. Avery’s favorite place to be is at the lake, preferably wake surfing. If she isn’t there, she’s probably on the phone with her grandma, getting a McDonald’s Diet Coke, or watching reruns of The Office with her roommates. Her survival kit consists of chapstick and a color-coordinated calendar, and she doesn’t go a day without listening to country music. With the little amount of time she has left at Auburn, she hopes to learn many new things to take along with her on her journey of life.
