Craving something sweet? You're in the right place.

It’s safe to say that most people have a sweet tooth, and no matter how hard you try, sometimes you just have to indulge. To satisfy my own cravings, and help you find the perfect place to do the same, I set out on an adventure to find the sweetest local dessert shops. Here are a few of my favorites. They're each a little different, so there is something for everyone!

Mylks Cookies

First on my list was Mylks Cookies, located just two blocks west of Toomer's Corner. As soon as you step through the door, the mouth-watering smell hits you. All of the cookies and pie-shaped goodies are on display, so you know exactly what your options are. Inside seating is limited, but there are a few tables outside if you plan to stick around to enjoy your sweets. I opted for taking mine to-go.

Thankfully, I made it before closing (they usually shut down at 9 p.m. on week nights) and got to enjoy some of Mylks has to offer. With so many options, I had a hard time choosing. Eventually I settled for two cookie ice-cream sandwiches, toffee and birthday cake. Attempting to eat one sandwich while rushing home to throw the other in the freezer was slightly stressful, but every last bite was worth it. Overall the options were great, and I can’t wait to go back and try more sweet treats.

Steel City Pops

The next place I had to check out was Steel City Pops. Found right downtown, the rugged and industrial atmosphere fit perfectly with their name. If the looks of this place don’t get you hooked, then their organic locally-harvested pops should do the trick. They have something for everyone — including vegan and gluten-free options!

I chose to indulge in a cookies n’ cream pop and chocolate-chip cake pop simply because only choosing one was virtually impossible. I will definitely be back to try some of their fruity and creamy popsicles ASAP.

Gigi’s Cupcakes

Right across the street is Gigi’s Cupcakes! This is one of my favorite places in downtown Auburn. If you are in the mood for something super sweet, this is probably your best option. The cupcakes are remarkable and the homey, comfortable atmosphere is the cherry on top. Gigi’s was nothing short of delicious. Their icing was rich and perfectly complimented the cake underneath.

They offer a variety of flavors year-round, but they switch things up seasonally and provide options like their pumpkin spice cupcake during the fall! Seating isn’t an issue here, and you can even order online if you aren’t in the mood to hangout. Whether you’re looking for a sweet surprise for someone else or craving a treat yourself, Gigi’s won’t disappoint.

D Square Donuts

Finally, I had to check out D Square Donuts. Everything inside reminded me of your typical hometown donut shop – but with a spunky twist. All of the donuts they make are square instead of round! They offer exotic flavors like salted caramel, red velvet cake, and mocha-filled depending on the day's menu. D Square not only offers amazing donuts but also homemade ice-cream and Italian ices.

They usually close at noon or whenever they sell-out for the day, which is a bummer for college kids on a tight schedule. I was happy I had time to stop by before closing and try their maple-bacon donut and plain chocolate covered donut. I wouldn’t usually opt for a bacon-flavored donut, but I'll admit I was impressed. It was different yet delicious, and I would definitely order it again. The relaxed atmosphere of D Square Donuts is a nice alternative to the hectic traffic of downtown Auburn and the long wait you're bound to encounter at Krispy Kreme.

Whether you're in the mood for a cupcake topped with delicious icing or something simple like a fruit-flavored pop, you're guaranteed to leave any of these shops satisfied.
