Five Tips for Weight Lifting Beginners
Being healthy mentally and physically can be achieved in many different ways. For me, weight lifting has become a huge part of my fitness journey.
As intimidating as it can be, aspiring to become a mindful weight lifter isn’t as hard as some may think. I have experienced new PR’s, learned new exercises, and even made new friends. In hopes of helping someone else who might still be on the fence about weight lifting, I have come up with five tips to get started. These tips are some I knew going into this process, but also some I have learned along the way. Weight lifting is a new journey each and everyday so don't let anything hold you back! Take these tips into consideration, and go for it!
Reach out to a personal trainer.
There is nothing wrong with doing a little research before you hit the gym. No one starts out knowing everything about lifting weights. One resource to take advantage of is our personal training team here at The Rec. They are always willing to help you gain a better understanding of an exercise you may want to try! I caught up with personal trainer Blake Crank, and he offered up these tips.
“Our personal training program offers a variety of services to help get you started in your fitness journey. We offer a comprehensive fitness appraisal which will allow a beginner to have trackable information that can be used to see progress with their new workout regimen. Our program also offers fitness consultations where our trainer will provide a workout program, demonstrate proper form, and answer any possible questions regarding training.”
Use dumbbells and barbells!
A lot of beginners seem to be frightened at the thought of picking up dumbbells or a barbell. It can be intimidating at first but once you use them a couple times, you won’t ever want to put them down. Sure, you can still incorporate machines and body weight exercises in your workout but don’t be afraid to branch out and start bench pressing or bicep curling!
Set a goal.
This can be difficult if you are just starting out. Find out what you are capable of doing, making sure you are consistent in reps of 10-12, and challenge yourself to go up in weight! Setting a goal for yourself will give you no excuse not to workout everyday!
Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Asking for help may seem a bit awkward, but you don’t want to risk messing up your form or getting hurt. If you are working out alone, just ask someone who may be doing the same exercise as you. They may even let you work in with them!
Be confident!
Weight lifting is a constant growing experience for your body. As a beginner, it is easy to feel uncomfortable when trying out this new hobby. Weight lifting is an experience that requires you to step out into unfamiliar territory. Everyone has a different pace, strength, and weakness so believe in yourself and don’t be afraid to branch out!
Don't put this new adventure off any longer! Keep these tips in mind, stay focused on your goals, and be well, Auburn.
