This summer was one for the books. I decided to try something different, and it actually paid off. Somehow, I landed on the set of a major movie production.

I skipped class, made friends, and learned all the industry secrets. So, if you’ve ever been curious to know what it’s like to make a movie — I’ve got you covered. Here are five things you didn’t know about making a movie.

The Hollywood Producers

Most producers are exactly what you would expect. Loud, aggressive, and want things done in the past tense. Their main job is to make sure everything is running smoothly, and more importantly, efficiently. At heart, they are really nice, and they will respect you as long as you are doing your job.

The Glamorous Life On Set

More like tough, fast and fun. In fact, a lot of our work was grueling. We had 12 hour days, and every second was spent doing something vitally important. Working on set requires you to be hyper aware at all times or else you’ll end up running into the wrong person — or the wrong equipment. That being said, the environment was thrilling, and I would do it again in a heartbeat!

The Actors

Fortunately, most of the actors I worked with were incredibly personable and more than willing to get to know everyone past the small talk. However, there was that one person who vocally questioned my existence. It’s fine. I’m fine.

The Extras

Don’t do it. It seems fun until it’s 1 a.m., and you’re wearing head-to-toe winter clothes in the middle of August. Extras have the least autonomy and usually get stuck in a room all day wondering when the “magic” will happen. On the plus side, you’re likely to get a picture with the cast members. 

The Food

Two words: Craft Services. Can you say snacks all day and steak and lobster for dinner? I can. I would do it again just for the food. #Praise

All in all, I give it a 10/10. Why?  Because I challenged myself, learned so many of new things, and I made life-long friends. Oh, I’ll also be in a movie. That’s cool too.
