Get Your Game On. Go Play.
Check out why you should be playing an intramural sport this season.
Whether you’re a sports fan, an athlete or someone just looking to get out and have some fun on campus, The Rec’s intramural program is a great place to start. I play several different intramural sports each year, and I continue to love it. In case you’re not already convinced you should join one, here are eight reasons why you should:
1. Exercise and stay in shape without getting bored
I don’t know about you, but I’m not a big fan of racing around a track. I quickly lose interest due to the monotonous nature of running in circles. However, put me on a basketball court or a soccer field, and I could run all day. There is no better way to stay in shape and have fun doing it than playing an intramural sport.
2. Meet new people
As I said before, team sports and sports in general make it easy to meet new people. The in-game environment creates a special camaraderie that helps build lasting friendships. Don’t know anyone creating a team? The free agency option within the intramural program at The Rec will help you join a league. I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn’t have a team to join but wants to play. I’ve made several friends because of it. As a free agent, you can be picked up by another team that needs players or be placed on a team made up of other free agents.
3. Play a brand new sport
The intramural program offers a variety of sports across three different levels of play, so there is a sport and level for everyone. If you want to try a completely new sport, simply join the beginner level and learn how to play alongside other people on your level.
4. Take a break
Let’s face it, everyday stress is just part of being a college student. Luckily, playing an intramural can help you de-stress. Running around and having fun on the court or field helps you forget about all the homework and projects you’ve been putting off 'til the last minute.
5. Experience all the glory that comes with being a champion
There are few things more coveted than the legendary intramural championship t-shirt every member of the winning team receives. Not only can you wear it around campus and show it off to your friends, but you will also have a lasting memory of all the intramural champion glory. Winning feels good, but winning it all feels amazing. As the great Ricky Bobby once said, “If you ain’t first, you’re last.”
6. Choose from a ton of different team or individual sports
The Rec offers more than 20 different intramural sports, so there is literally a sport for everyone. Whether you’re into individual sports or team sports, there’s a place for you. You can make new friends in a team setting or become friends with the very person you are playing against.
7. Pick a schedule that works with your own
Excuses like "I don't have time," won't cut it. With intramurals, you have the ability to pick your playing days and times, so no more excuses. You probably don’t have anything to do at 8 p.m. on a Tuesday, so why not spend it playing intramurals?
8. Join because it’s free
Being broke is a general theme among college students. Because of this, we love free things. Whether it’s that free t-shirt from some random company on the concourse or that coveted buy-one-get-one burrito card from Chipotle, we will take anything we can get. The good news is most intramural sports are free. Need any more convincing? Didn't think so.
No matter your skill level or availability, there is an intramural sport with your name on it. Sign up on IM Leagues and give it a chance. You won’t regret it!
Be well, Auburn.
