Why We Yoga Rave

In 2014, the Auburn Family lost a very special individual.

Bear Townsend was an Auburn student and group fitness instructor at The Rec. He loved working out and had a passion for practicing yoga. People close to him describe him as always thinking of others before himself.

That same year, The Rec held an event in his memory to heal our community and celebrate his life. We are a family, and this event symbolizes our love for each other.  It’s a time to encourage individuals to come together and know they are not alone.

Yoga Rave is now held annually as a dedication to Bear’s life and as an uplifting event for all members of the Auburn family. This year, the theme for Yoga Rave is "Be Bold." The event encourages participants to be unafraid of life’s challenges and to be courageous in their journey.

What is Yoga Rave exactly?

It’s a two-hour celebration with dancing, yoga, meditation, reflection and community. The practice encompasses moves from Bolly X, a dance stemming from India, along with a guided yoga flow. Expect to meet a new friend — some partner yoga will be involved!

What should I bring?

Participants should arrive decked out in neon and white attire. The Rec staff members will be painting faces and providing glow sticks. Bring water and your friends! Some mats will be provided. Group Fit passes are not required!

How can I participate in addition to attending?

You will have the opportunity to dedicate your practice to someone, past or present, and set your intention for the evening. Names of dedication will be projected onto the walls during the final relaxation for a moment of silence and reflection.

Yoga Rave is unique to Auburn’s campus and The Rec community. The event is intended for individuals of all backgrounds. If you’re a regular yogi or if you have never practiced before, this event is for you. The room will be mostly dark, as to center the focus and allow each individual to practice without being self-conscious.

The foundation of Yoga Rave is what gives it meaning. We are in this together. After a night of yoga and dance, we hope you walk out with a new friend while feeling empowered and loved.

Join in on the celebration Thursday, February 28 from 6-8 p.m. in the MAC gym.

Be well, Auburn.
