Biggest Blockbusters to Look Out for in 2020

I like to think of myself as somewhat of a cinephile.

Whenever a movie comes out, I spend way too much time looking at online reviews (spoiler-free, of course) and making initial judgements about whether or not it’s worth my time.

Lately, though, I’ve been in the habit of doing my preliminary research early and reading up on films that haven’t been released yet. Here’s a list of the ones that caught my eye.

Birds of Prey

As much as I didn’t want to include prequels/sequels on this list, I have to admit that this Harley Quinn stand-alone flick shows some promise. After the travesty that was “Suicide Squad,” it’ll be interesting to see how this one will compare, especially since Jared Leto’s Joker won’t be in the film at all.

BIOS

TOM HANKS IS IN THIS MOVIE! “BIOS” is a science fiction drama about the last man on Earth who builds a robot to keep his dog safe (which is exactly the kind of thing Tom Hanks would do in real life). Filmmaker Miguel Sapochnik, who has directed some of the best episodes of “Game of Thrones,” has a lot to live up to, as expectations for this film are already through the roof.

The Witches

Auburn’s own Octavia Spencer plays a part in this movie (war eagle to that), and it’s based on the Roald Dahl book. His book was already adapted for the screen in 1990, so it’ll be interesting to see how the 2020 version compares. Director Robert Zemeckis’s last film, “Welcome to Marwen,” wasn’t very well received; though his repertoire is very impressive — he also made “Castaway,” “Forrest Gump,” “Back to the Future,” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.”

Black Widow

Okay, I know, another prequel/sequel/movie-that-takes-place-within-a-larger-story, but you have to admit that this movie is going to be huge. Of course, it’s Marvel’s world, and we’re all just living in it, but anyone can admit it’s about time Black Widow got to shine in her own solo film.

Last Night in Soho

Edgar Wright has made some pretty amazing movies, and hopefully “Last Night in Soho” will be a shining addition to his list. The film is currently being marketed as a psychological horror, which is kind of odd considering his most famous movies are “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” “Shaun of the Dead,” and “Baby Driver.” However, if there’s anyone I have faith in to make this movie great, it’s Edgar Wright.

Greyhound

Another Tom Hanks movie! The man never stops. While “BIOS” is set in the future, “Greyhound” is set during World War II. Hanks will play a naval officer who is over the Greyhound (a warship) and will battle his own personal demons as well as Nazis, according to the limited information available about the film.

Legally Blonde 3

How could I not include “Legally Blonde 3”? I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited about Elle Woods’ return to the silver screen. While production likely hasn’t started yet, release is slated for 2020, and I cannot wait. Plot details are pretty secretive, but Reese Witherspoon has confirmed that she’ll be back and blonder than ever, and that’s about all I need to know.

Are you as excited as I am for all of the new releases coming out in 2020? Let us know if you think we missed anything in the comments below!

Be well, Auburn.
