A Guide to Outdoor Activities Around Auburn
Auburn students love to be outdoors.
You’ll see us lounging on Samford lawn, strolling the Arboretum, or throwing a frisbee in the quad. But sometimes we all crave a change of scenery. Here are a few things you can do to spend some time in the great outdoors without having to travel too far.
Smith Mountain Fire Tower
You’ve likely heard someone talk about the fire tower. It’s a 40-minute drive from Auburn and there is an option for a paved hike or a more difficult trail. The parking lot gives easy access to either choice. To take a paved trail, head straight and for the cross-country trail, take a right. The fire tower is especially popular at sunrise or sunset but is a beautiful place to visit any time of the day.
Lake Martin
If you want to visit Lake Martin but aren’t sure where to go, try D.A.R.E Power Park. There are pavilions, grills, public restrooms, and a beach to enjoy the water. The park is typically open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Two more spots at Lake Martin include Acapulco Rock Island and Chimney Rock Island. You can only reach these places by boat, but if you have a chance, check them out!
Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail
This 4.2-mile loop near the Tallapoosa River is a beautiful hike at any time of the year. The trail is rated as moderate, so any skill level is welcome. You can find a map and more info on this one here.
Alabama is a beautiful state with so much to offer. We are fortunate to have so much nature at our fingertips. Leave no trace, and…
