Veggie Tales: Misfits Market Produce Delivery
Food delivery is huge right now.
From Blue Apron to Home Chef, there are tons of delivery meal kit options to try. I put a lot of emphasis on veggies (#health), so I started searching around and found vegetable delivery companies Misfits Market, Imperfect Foods, and Hungry Harvest. I signed up for a Misfits Market subscription, and the rest is history. Here’s how it works:
What is it?
Misfits Market is a produce subscription service that you tailor to your preferences, much like meal subscription services. Here’s why I think it stands out, though: it’s focused on sustainability. Did you know that grocery stores don’t accept certain produce because they are too small, too big, or oddly shaped? It creates a lot of food waste. Brands like Misfits Market take these rejected (but totally edible) fruits and veggies and sell them back to the consumer at a discounted rate.
How does it work? Do I get to choose what’s in my box?
Along with choosing when and how often your delivery comes, you can pick the size of the box you want. The catch is that you don’t know which produce is coming to your door, as there’s no way to “choose” meals (at least when using Misfits Market). This doesn’t bother me, as I love to cook; finding new things in the box every other week gives me new challenges. However, this can be a serious drawback for people who like to plan.
Why do you love it?
It helps me incorporate significantly more veggies into my weekly meals. I meal prep, so I get my box, see what’s in it, and plan my meals accordingly. I love being able to eat healthier for a fraction of the cost, and not having to go to the store is a personal luxury — I hate grocery shopping. It’s a thing. I have a pretty stocked spice cabinet, and I tend to keep basics like broths, rice, and quinoa on hand so I can avoid the store. (I told you, it’s a thing). If I need anything extra, like a protein or sauce, I usually spend max $25 at the store for the rest of the week’s food and supplements. So, for all you budgeters out there, I spend about $50 total to feed myself lunch and dinner (plus snacks) for approximately a week and a half. Not bad!
