Beginner's Guide to the University Career Center
One of the best tips I have for Auburn students is to take advantage of the University Career Center.
When I got to college, I had no idea what I wanted to do, so I picked a random major. I had heard about the Career Center, but I avoided it since I’m not one to ask for help. As freshmen year went by, I became more lost about what I wanted the rest of my college career to look like. I finally made my way to the Career Center, and I’m so glad I did. Whether you’re a new student or have been here for years, here’s how the University Career Center can help you.
Deciding Your Major
The Career Center has multiple resources to help you decide what you want to study. They work with you through career tests and talk through your interests in order to provide you with a list of majors that fit you best. The counselors are there to guide you through college and help you succeed in finding your perfect career fit. I met with a career counselor to help me pick a major, and it was a huge help.
Career Pathways
If you’re looking for ways to improve your chances of landing the job you want, you’re in the right place. The Career Center offers advice for specific classes to take, part-time jobs to get, or organizations to join in order to prepare you for your dream career. Each major has a specific path you can follow to reach your career goals, and the Career Center will help you get started.
Interview Help
Interviews can be super intimidating. The Career Center guides you through mock interviews, online practices, and many tips for nailing down your next interview. They even have a career closet in Martin Hall where you can borrow an outfit if you lack access to business professional clothes. It’s a one-stop-shop to get you interview-ready.
Finding a Job/Internship
The main goal of the Career Center is to help students find a job they are passionate about. Throughout the year, there will be career events and job fairs that will help you get connected with employers and different companies. They will also teach you how to look for the right jobs and point you in the right direction so you can avoid job scams.
This is just the beginning of what the University Career Center has to offer. I hope you got a sneak peek of what they are all about. Ultimately, they are here to help you find your purpose and guide you through your college career.
Be well, Auburn.
