Health Benefits of Fall Drinks

Fall is the time for flavors, trends, scents, and a drink culture like no other.

Cinnamon, ginger, cocoa, and pumpkin spice are floating through the air, and the cozy, comfort feelings are all the buzz. When it comes to Fall drinks, do you know how healthy they actually are? I’m here to give you the scoop on the benefits of all your Fall favorites.

Pumpkin Spice

First up is the basic, but beneficial, pumpkin spice. Contrary to popular belief, pumpkin spice is actually made up of many different spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. Cinnamon and nutmeg have high concentrations of salicylic acid, which is beneficial for anti-inflammation and skin health. Another benefit includes a great source of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for immunity, cell division, and antioxidants.

Chai

I love this one a “latte.” Chai lattes were my go-to before I became a coffee drinker. Chai is another spice combo that has a wonder of benefits. Typically made up of black tea, ginger, cinnamon cloves, and cardamom, one of the major perks to having this drink is the boost in heart health. Black tea contains flavonoids that can help prevent plaque buildup in the body’s arteries— lessening stress on the heart. Also, the ginger in chai can be helpful in reducing cramps.

Apple Cider

Apple cider is next on the list. You can drink it hot or cold, and it’s the perfect fall drink for all climates. One of the best benefits is that it contains polyphenols. Polyphenols are compounds in plants that act as antioxidants, which help to lower the risk of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Hot Chocolate

This “hot” topic drink has some great additions. The healthy fats in dark cocoa assist the blood in absorbing sugar— slowly helping to combat insulin spikes. Cocoa is also high in vitamins and minerals such as potassium, copper, magnesium, and iron.

Overall, these Fall favorites pack a punch in the health world. While some of the additions in these drinks can be unhealthy, it’s still good to know that you’re getting some perks in the comfort of the season.

Be well, Auburn.
