8 Things To Do Before 8 a.m.
Although it might be stereotypical for college students to stay out all night and sleep all day, I pride myself on being an early riser.
Mornings are when I am most productive. If you're looking to increase your productivity and start your day off feeling accomplished, here are eight things to do before 8:00 a.m.
1. Start By Setting An Alarm
When your body is accustomed to staying up until the early-morning hours and sleeping until noon, it is a good idea to get on a schedule. Start with getting in bed at an earlier time and setting an alarm. This will allow you to wake up earlier, while still getting the recommended eight hours of sleep.
It might be challenging for the first few days, but your circadian rhythms will eventually balance out, leading to a full night’s sleep. Additionally, if the sound of an alarm ruins your mood, try the Hatch alarm clock and rise with the sun for a more subtle awakening.
2. Hydrate!
You lose water during your sleep, so it is so important to rehydrate first thing in the morning. Drinking a glass of water after waking helps replenish your fluids and starts hydrating you for the day ahead. Start by filling up a cup or bottle the night before, so it will be ready when you wake up!
3. No Screen Time for 15 Minutes
Take the first few minutes of your day to reflect on the day ahead. Most likely, for the majority of your day, you will be staring at a screen. Whether it be a phone, laptop, or TV, Americans average around 12 hours of screen time every day. If you journal or enjoy using a planner, spend this time mapping out your day and setting yourself up for success.
4. Make Your Bed
I have recently implemented this practice into my routine. I used to not think much about it, but after I began making my bed regularly, I realized that it is such a game changer. It feels great to come home to a clean and tidy bedroom after a long day. Also, making your bed is a psychological game—a rewarding and easy way to check one thing off of your to-do list first thing in the morning.
5. Get a Dose of Vitamin D!
Starting your morning out with a walk is shown to improve your mood for the day, reduce stress, and help boost your energy. Getting up and getting active prepares you to tackle the challenges the day brings. Get up and get some sunshine!
6. Shower + Skincare
Begin your day with some self-care. Taking care of your skin is so important! One major change I have made in my morning routine is using sunscreen daily. This helps by lowering your chance of skin cancer by 40-50%. It is easier to take preventative measures in protecting your skin than it is to correct the damage that has been done. Do not delay, start a good skincare routine today.
7. Enjoy Your Favorite Coffee or Tea
Next up, my favorite part of the day: making my coffee (or going to Starbucks)! I am slightly addicted to drinking coffee, so this always makes my morning mood so much better. Find a coffee or tea that brings you joy, and savor your time drinking it.
8. Breakfast of Champions
Although I am not a huge fan of breakfast, it is shown to boost mood and focus throughout the day, as well as help in managing your appetite. Starting your day with a balanced, nutritious meal will fuel you and set you up for success. Try prepping breakfast the night before, such as overnight oats or make-ahead egg muffins.
