The Busy College Student’s Guide to Self-Care

As college students, burnout is common when juggling homework, projects, meetings, and possibly even part-time jobs.

It's important to set aside time during your week to focus on yourself and let go of some stress. I've compiled a list of five self-care tips to enjoy at any time of the day!

Exercise

Exercising may feel like a chore and that’s okay. My time spent at the gym proves to be very relaxing. I normally start with an inclined walk on the treadmill just to be alone with my thoughts or I'll attend a Group Fitness dance class. Whether you go by yourself or with a friend, exercising gives you the chance to relax your muscles and release endorphins in your brain.

Listen to Music

One of my favorite things to do when I'm feeling overwhelmed by life is to get in my car, drive around Auburn, and blast my favorite songs. It gives me a chance to escape the everyday stresses and enjoy a mini break. Personally, I'll turn on some Taylor Swift, but any music that makes you feel better will work. So, if you’re having a long day just pop in your earbuds and chill for a few minutes.

Sleep

If you’re anything like me, getting a full eight hours of sleep is hard when you're staying up late to meet deadlines and then waking up at 6 a.m. to workout. While it's easy to slip into the habit of substituting sleep with coffee or some sort of caffeinated drink, try taking a nap instead! There are many benefits to taking naps such as relaxation, improved mood, and increased alertness. Just remember to prioritize sleep, because it is crucial for a sound mind and body.

Watch Your Comfort Movie

After a full week of things to do, it's nice to kick back and turn on your favorite movie or TV show to binge-watch the night away. I have found that getting cozy on a Friday night and turning on the Harry Potter series has made me feel less stressed than going out and spending money. Enjoy the night and take your mind off all the due dates on your calendar, even if it's just for an hour or two.

Meditate

Meditation has recently become a trend again, and if done correctly, it can be a quick and easy stress reliever. I have started implementing yoga and meditation into my morning routine, and I have already noticed how calm and relaxed it makes me feel. Contrary to popular belief, meditation is not super difficult, and anyone can do it. You can start today by clicking here!

These are just some easy ways to implement self-care into your life, which will ultimately create a less stressful environment for you to thrive in.

Namaste!
