How to Beat Finals
The end of this semester is upon us, and so are project deadlines, last-minute bonus grades, and final exams.
It is very easy to let the overbearing stress of exams consume your every thought, but there are different ways to combat it to make finals week just a little bit easier. I've compiled a list of tips to make your finals week a little less stressful.
Eat Well
The first tip is to make sure you are eating enough and drinking plenty of water. Keeping your body fueled should be a top priority so you have the energy to continue studying. Auburn University offers free food opportunities for students to take advantage of during finals week, such as Up All Night and War Damn Finals Cram. Last finals week, I was studying at the library and was given free orange juice, donuts, and a hug from Aubie! When I go to the library during the day, I pack snacks I can munch on while I'm working through practice problems. I’ve found bringing snacks fuels my brain and allows me to focus for longer periods of time.
Time Management
Another key piece of advice for avoiding test stress is to manage your time well. Taking “brain breaks” are essential so that you don’t overdo yourself. Keep in mind that your body needs rest! Even though an all-nighter may seem like a good idea the night before a test, it is important to go home and get a good eight hours of sleep. I personally like to schedule my days so I can see where I have free time. I have found that if I can see my schedule, then it eliminates the stress of feeling like time is running out before a test.
Mental Health Breaks
It's also important to keep in mind your mental health during overly stressful weeks. Auburn University’s Student Counseling and Psychological Services offers free therapy sessions, visits with therapy dogs, and the Zen Den that includes a massaging chair! During a break from studying, just head over to SCPS and decompress with the staff. Or, if a mental break means a walk outside with a friend, do it. Figure out what works best for you to achieve self-care during one of the most stressful weeks of the year.
Just remember that test anxiety is normal. Almost everyone gets nervous about a test, even if they have studied for weeks. Just make sure you are keeping your mental and physical wellness in mind as well when cramming for finals this year.
Be well, Auburn.
