Advice From A Transfer Student
Being a transfer student is not the best situation overall and can be very overwhelming.
I didn't know anyone when I transferred after my sophomore year of college, so it was a little nerve-wracking, but I'm glad I made the choice! This past year at Auburn has been one of the best ones yet! It's amazing how many people I've gotten to know personally, organizations I’ve become a part of, and events I’ve been able to attend. I would like to offer some guidance that got me through my first year at Auburn.
Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
I decided to re-join all of the organizations I had been involved in at my previous school as soon as I arrived at Auburn. I was able to network, get more involved, and meet new people thanks to this. I became an Auburn Young Life leader, rejoined my sorority, and was chosen to participate in the Auburn Dance Marathon. Attending interest meetings or involvement fairs is something I would highly recommend because you never know when you might find your perfect home.
Don’t Be Afraid to Talk to People
I urge you to go out and strike up conversations with folks in your classes or around campus. In the future, networking with individuals or organizations that share your major will be crucial. Throughout your time in college, more opportunities will present themselves to you as you make more connections.
Don’t Feel Ashamed About Having Some Extra Time in College
When you transfer, you almost certainly have to enroll in an additional semester or year of college, which isn't always ideal. As a result, you begin to question if you made the right choice in transferring. Pay no attention to that voice! You made the right choice for yourself, and for me, having an extra year of college has been a blessing since it has allowed me to spend more time with my loved ones and develop a deeper connection with my new university.
Transferring to a new school can be challenging at first, but this is the best journey you will be embarking on. You're going to make some of your best friends in college and have some incredible experiences! Take full advantage of this moment as it won't last forever and you won't be a child again.
Be Well, Auburn
