Snow Day in Auburn

Auburn students woke up to a winter wonderland last month, as the Plains saw its first snowfall in years!

With around 1.5 inches of snow covering campus on January 21, 2025, classes were canceled for three whole days, giving students a rare chance to enjoy a true snow day in the South.

For many, this was their first time seeing Auburn covered in white (apart from a good sports win) since January 17, 2018, nearly seven years ago! Snow this far south is a rarity, so students made sure to take full advantage. However, for some northern students, this was not out of the ordinary. Natalie, a junior from Maryland, commented and said “My favorite part of the snow day was actually walking around campus and seeing everyone’s reactions to the snow, especially the Alabamians who never get to see it. The joy on their faces brought me to tears”.

Samford Lawn became the heart of the action, with students gathering to take pictures, build snowmen, and even plan a massive snowball fight. But the real fun happened on Auburn’s hills, where students grabbed whatever they could: storage bin lids, trashcans, and even couches, to turn into makeshift sleds.

There were a few students who were braver than they should have been and hopped in the car to go somewhere. Many soon realized there’s a reason we don’t drive in Alabama when it snows; for days after, cars could be seen off to the sides of most main roads in the city, stuck in ditches due to ice.

Campus may have been closed, but the Auburn spirit was alive and well. Social media was full of pictures of Toomer’s Corner dusted in snow, and students huddled up in their dorms and apartments, enjoying the time off with friends. Nate, a junior from Auburn, AL, said, “The best part of my snow day was getting stranded with all of my friends at my apartment. We had no choice but to spend the whole night together, and I made some of my favorite Auburn memories.”

Though the snow has now melted and classes are back in session, we will reminisce on the snow day of 2025! Hopefully, we won’t have to wait another seven years for the next one!

Be well, Auburn.
