The Rec on Tech: Get Running With These Useful Apps
Technology is a tricky thing. It keeps us connected at all times, but it can also be distracting and time consuming, especially during a workout!
Being connected isn’t always a bad thing, though. When used right, your phone can be the best piece of workout equipment you have! Check out these two awesome apps to help you make the most of your tech-filled workout! Your phone will be transformed into your best running partner and strongest motivator, getting you up and running in no time!
Zombies, Run!
Most people avoid running at all cost. If you can relate to “most people,” you need to download Zombies, Run! This post-apocalyptic app can be found on Google play and the App Store. The objective of the game is to collect supplies, save survivors and bring them back to your settlement while simultaneously escaping mobs of zombies. Each run turns into a mission, catapulting you into your personal zombie thriller film. You control the time and distance, but while you run, cues tell you when you should speed up and when it is safe to slow down. Once you meet your goal, the mission is complete.
Zombies, Run! will keep track of your runs in an easily accessible log. The app is free, but also offers a pro version that opens 200+ missions and more statistics about your run. The free version opens four missions automatically, with the ability to unlock a new one every week. If you find yourself wanting to unlock the extra features, the app is $2.99 monthly or $19.99 annually. Give the app a shot during your next run and to see if you can survive your own zombie movie!
Charity Miles
If running from brainless beasts isn’t your "thing" then perhaps a good cause will get you moving! Charity Miles is a free app that encourages you to get active by giving you 39 total charities to run for! All you have to do is download the app on the App Store or on Google Play, pick a charity, and go!
Do this before each run, walk or bike ride and Charity Miles will donate money to your selected charity based on how far you move. The money comes from one of Charity Miles’ awesome sponsors such as Johnson & Johnson, Chobani and Humana. The app makes it even easier for you by logging your miles and sessions. Trying to exercise consistently? There’s even a feature to set a repeating reminder for a time of day, so you never miss a run. With this app, it is a win-win.
Pushing yourself to get active is a challenge, but hopefully these two apps will motivate you to take advantage of technology and get moving. Whether you are running from zombies or raising money for your favorite charity, you’ll be making a difference. Have a favorite running app of your own? Let us know in the comments below!
As always,
Be well, Auburn.

Cameron moved quite a bit before being able to call Auburn home. Born in Kentucky, then moving to Texas, North Carolina, then back to Texas, it is safe to say he is quite familiar with being the new kid in town.
He enjoys everything life has to offer, specifically Game of Thrones, nights downtown and, well, talking. If you find him say hey, and he will say it back. You will know when you meet him, because you will probably hear him before you see him.
