Whether you’ve only spent a few months living in Alabama, or have grown up here your whole life, it’s time to explore the beautiful parts of the state we call home. After all, the best way to spend your weekend is away from the computer and into the woods.
The Walls of Jericho
Unique rock formations in Estillfork, Alabama create the “Walls of Jericho.” Turkey Creek drains through these walls creating beautiful waterfalls. This is a perfect hiking and camping spot that allows you to challenge yourself with some slightly strenuous climbs.
Little River Canyon
If you’ve ever been to Lookout Mountain, you might have heard of Little River Canyon. Swim, fish, hike, or whitewater raft your way through the river in Fort Payne, Alabama. The Little River has carved out some of the deepest canyons in the Southeast. You’ve got to see it for yourself.
Sipsey Wilderness
Containing dozens of waterfalls and hiking trails, the Sipsey Forest is a sight for sore eyes. Make your way up to Moulton, Alabama to experience the beauty that surrounds the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River. This forest has been nicknamed “The Land of 1000 Waterfalls.”
Dismals Canyon
Phil Campell, Alabama offers a magical outdoor experience. Dismalites, which are tiny bioluminescent insects, light up the canyon walls at night during the guided night tours. Dismals offers a pleasant camping experience for all with campsites as well as indoor cabins.
Falling Rock Falls
Head up to Montevallo, Alabama to visit beautiful Falling Rock Falls. This trail is an easy hike for any skill level that leads to one of the most impressive waterfalls in the state. The waterfall also offers a swimming hole to cool off at the end of the journey.
As you can see, you don’t have to plan visits all over the country to experience the great outdoors. Adventure is just right around the corner. Maggie comes from a big family in Birmingham, Alabama. She came to Auburn along with her older brother and sister in hopes to create her own college experience. Her passion for meeting and learning about new people led her to pursue a degree in communication with a minor in marketing. Outside of school and work, you can usually find her taking a walk down College Street or working with horses at her childhood summer camp.
