Advantages of a Capsule Wardrobe
When I dress for specific occasions, I often struggle with finding an outfit that I feel comfortable and look good in.
I spend so much money on clothing, but always hear myself saying “I have nothing to wear.” My wardrobe mainly consists of graphic tees, old flannels, and tons of sweatshirts. For a while, I have wanted to level up my closet, but never knew the best solution. After exploring capsule wardrobes, I think I’ve found the solution to my outfit crisis.
What is it?
A capsule wardrobe is a set of interchangeable clothing items that mix and match to create several different outfit combinations. The closet contains basics that never go out of style and can be worn with multiple accessories.
How to shop for it?
Whether you want to narrow down your wardrobe to these select basics or start from scratch, there are many shops where you can start finding these pieces. Places like Abercrombie, Anthropologie, H&M, Marine Layer, Madewell, and Gap are just a few retailers that offer great, quality basics. Abercrombie and Madewell are my go-to for jeans, and H&M and Gap are perfect for simple tees, sweaters, and dresses. Invest in the closet staples (jeans, white tees, etc.), because the higher price tag will typically warrant better quality and will last you longer. It's hard to avoid the temptation of buying exciting statement pieces. I try to limit myself to only a few of these items and make sure that what I buy is something I will wear.
Environmental Impact
While there may be initial “sticker shock”, it will end up saving you more money in the future. The money you invest into higher quality pieces will be a better value for each cost-per-wear. By avoiding fast fashion and trend hopping, your items will be more timeless. The waste that comes from overconsumption of cheap, trendy clothing hurts the environment and your wallet. Avoid buying into the ever-changing trends because it will be impossible to keep up. You can also look at purchasing second-hand items that have been “preloved” and give them a new life!
