What's in Your Bag? A Guide to College Backpack Essentials

There is always a scenario in which you need something from your backpack that isn’t there.

From a seasoned veteran, this senior knows the rights and wrongs to keep in your backpack— even if it's a chocolate protein bar that’s turned into a sticky mess in the hot sun. I’ve learned a thing or two about what goes into the art of preparing your backpack for school. Here are some tips on all things packing and prepping.

Academic Essentials!

Digital Gadgets

Your laptop or tablet will be your go-to for research, essays, and maybe even the occasional Netflix break-- actually, especially that Netflix break. Don’t forget the chargers! These are vital to long days in the library with multiple assignments breathing down your neck. Your headphones are a large part of getting in your own headspace, whether it’s tuning out distractions or pretending you are in a music video on your campus commute.

Quality Note-Taking Tools

I know, all the tech does this for you - but don’t forget the importance of notetaking with a pen, pencil, or highlighter. You never know when a professor is going to require writing the materials down instead of typing. Save yourself from the anxiety and bring a pencil pouch! Don’t forget to add in Post-It notes and index cards. They are perfect for when you need to do some studying on the go.

Personal Comfort: Stay Cozy and Organized!

Planner, Calendar, or Small Journal

This one might not be a necessity for all students, but I know quite a few who love the concept of viewing all their obligations of the week to help them stay organized. Even having a place to jot down quick thoughts and reminders can be helpful, especially when you are moving from class to class as quickly as possible. The more organized you are, the less stress you’ll experience!

Basic Toiletries

Carry a small toiletry bag with essentials like deodorant, tissues, lip balm, a comb, hand sanitizer, and even some concealer if you feel the need. You never know when you might need to freshen up, and these little things can make you feel more comfortable throughout the day.

Emergency Supplies: Be Ready for Anything

First-Aid Kit

It's not just for major injuries; it's also handy for treating minor scrapes, cuts, or headaches. Your kit should include adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any personal medications you may need. That way, you will be ready for anything. If you see someone in need, reach out!

Sewing Kit

Although sewing kits may seem old-fashioned, they're surprisingly useful. You never know when you might pop a button, tear a seam, or need a quick clothing repair. A small sewing kit can save you from wardrobe malfunctions and keep you looking put-together.

Power Bank

In our digital age, a charged phone or laptop is a lifeline. A portable power bank can help you stay connected even if you can't find an outlet. Don't let a dead battery leave you stranded in a crucial moment, whether it's receiving a class crush’s contact info, or calling your mom after your midterm!

Self-Defense Items

How prepared you want to be in this scenario is a personal choice, but items such as pepper spray can provide a sense of security in unfamiliar or potentially unsafe situations. If you are to carry something like this with you, make sure you can use it safely and responsibly.

Umbrella or Poncho

Weather can be unpredictable, and getting caught in the rain without protection is not enjoyable. A compact poncho or umbrella can keep you dry during unexpected downpours and help you commute more easily!

Personal Essentials: The Little Things That Matter.

Wallet, Student ID & Keys

Losing your wallet, student ID, or keys can be a major inconvenience in college. Any one of these items can be a real frustration to lose, so make sure you create a routine where you check for these items before leaving any location. Keep them in a specific pocket within your backpack so that you always know where to find them.

Remember, your backpack is your mobile headquarters. It’s a reflection of your preparedness, in all aspects of life! Make sure to have it properly stocked with all you need to take on the day.

Be Well, Auburn.

Born and raised in Roswell, GA, Grace grew up with a UGA Bulldawg and an FSU Seminole as parents. Clearly, it caused quite a shock when she decided on Auburn. Almost four years later, neither parent will commit to Auburn orange, but they have gotten on board with the decision, considering how happy their daughter is at her school. Now a senior, Grace is studying Communications and Marketing, with a minor in Journalism, and is hoping to make her way into the Marketing world, ideally in the music industry.

When she is not involved in extracurriculars, work, or school, Grace can be found thrifting, searching for new vinyl shops, working out, or enjoying a great book. Her favorite things include her dogs, live music, sushi, and a great fall day. For her last year at Auburn, Grace has hopes for incredible moments of laughter and learning, with old friends and new ones, as she soaks in every possible moment that makes Auburn home.
