Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

On April 22nd, 1970, the first Earth Day was celebrated across the U.S. What started as a day to protest the lack of laws against pollution turned into a national holiday we still celebrate today.

Thanks to the hundreds of protestors who gathered on this day 55 years ago, we enjoy federal regulations that ensure our right to clean air and water. Here are some ways to celebrate our Earth today!

Take a hike

A way to stay fit, clear your mind, and take in incredible views? Sign me up! Hiking in Auburn may not be the best in the world, but there are still some beautiful trails to be explored.

Here are two of my favorite hiking spots: Chewacla is a 696-acre state park right outside of Auburn. This spot includes many trails in the forest, by the lake, and even some leading to a waterfall! Kreher is a nature reserve designed specifically to help the Auburn community get in touch with the outdoors. Enjoy 6 miles of walking trails, ponds, and plenty of wildlife here. Get out there this Earth Day and explore all Auburn has to offer.

Get Involved

Support the land you love! Auburn has many opportunities to volunteer for cleanups, preservation, and gardening/maintenance work. Volunteering is a great way to meet friends or get a resume booster, but most importantly keep Auburn looking and feeling beautiful. Although this may not be the most glamorous work, a day of volunteering will always leave you feeling content. Here are a couple of environmental volunteer organizations in Auburn:

Get On the Water

Thanks to Earth Day protests, the Clean Water Act was passed in the U.S! This act establishes the base regulations for banning pollutants from entering our water. Without this act, lakes, streams, and rivers would be vulnerable to harmful chemicals with no protection. Honor this amazing act by swimming, canoeing, or just ogling at the fresh, clear water we are so lucky to have!

Spread the word

Tell your friends to take care of our Earth! Here are some environmental facts to keep in mind and spread awareness for this Earth Day.

  • The average American produces about 5 pounds of solid waste per day. Try to limit your waste by avoiding buying single-use items!

  • The average American uses 80-100 gallons of water per day. Be mindful when using running water!

  • Waterway trash can often come from land-based activities. Keep your trash in the trash can to protect wildlife, vegetation, and our water!

Go make the most of our beautiful planet! Happy Earth Day!

Be Well, Auburn.

Crystal is a junior majoring in marketing and double minoring in Italian and sales. She spent her freshman year of college at Baylor University (Sic ‘em) before transferring to Auburn where she found her home!

Born and raised in Montana, Crystal’s passion for the outdoors started at a young age. You can often find her hiking, floating in the river, or just sitting in the sun. When she’s not out enjoying nature, Crystal loves to read, travel anywhere new, listen to the oldies, and spend quality time with family and friends. After graduation, she aspires to travel as much as possible, pursue a career in real estate or social media marketing, and eventually find her way back to the Rockies.
