Traveling on a Budget

As summer approaches, some of our favorite outdoor activities are available again, like the beach, the lake, or the mountains. Since I was a child, I have always enjoyed taking a trip outdoors with family and friends. Even for my birthday growing up, I would ask my parents if we could go on a trip instead receiving of presents. As a college student though, finding ways to travel without going broke is tough, but not impossible. Budgeting your trip costs can be less stressful with these easy tips!

 Catch Flights, Not Stress

For those flying to their destination, there’s an easy way to save money on flights. A way to save a considerable amount on plane tickets is to track flights beforehand. Sign up for newsletters, like Thrifty Traveler and Dollar Flight Club. These programs will monitor your flights of choice and show you the best deals. Another great app to use is Skyscanner, this shows you the cheapest days of the month to book a flight.

Ballin’ on a Budget

Budgeting for a trip is better than stressing about money while on vacation. A great way to save money, from experience, is using the app, Digit. I have used this app countless times to set up a vacation fund, and it automatically transfers from my checking account periodically. It monitors your spending and only takes out what it thinks you won’t need, so there are no worries about overdrafts. Mint is another approach to planning your next trip. Mint does not directly withdraw money for you, but categorizes your money and allows you to customize your budget.

Save While You Stay

Unless you are aiming for an extravagant getaway, hotels are the last place you need to be overspending. There are countless cheaper options such as staying in hostels, which can be as cheap as forty dollars. Air BnB rentals can be a good option for traveling when the cost is shared among friends. Camping is another great option that is more than likely, free. With the help of the internet, you can find free campsites all over the U.S. (including National Parks). I would personally recommend checking out these options before booking a hotel.

Location, Location, Location

Regardless of your decision to split costs with your friends for an AirBnB or splurge on a nice hotel, where you stay is everything. If you’re sightseeing in a big city, staying in a relatively central location will allow you to walk to your excursions or major landmarks, without having to rent a car or taxi. Being in a central part of the city will also give you easy access to cheap public transportation.

Winter > Summer

Whether you’re traveling across the globe, or simply on the beach, the time of year has a major impact on your travel costs. Peak season means peak prices, but traveling during the off-season, will save you more and be less crowded!

From personal experience, these budgeting tips will ease some stress for your next trip and have your wallet thanking you!
