World Social Media Day
Happy World Social Media Day!
This generation understands the impact social media has on our lives. Nowadays, it is difficult to find someone who does not have some form of an online presence. Social media is a great way to be creative and share content with your friends, but you can also use it to network yourself and find resources that may be limited where you are physically.
Connections
Social media apps are a great way to stay connected with your friends and family. This is especially true for students living far from home. We arenât always able to meet with our loved ones regularly and catch up, but apps like Instagram and Facebook give us a quick and easy way to keep up to date on what is going on in their lives. It is also a good tool for networking purposes. LinkedIn and Handshake are helpful for finding job opportunities and making connections with new people who have similar interests and ambitions.
Education
On a real note, whose teacher did not play at least one Hank Green or Bill Nye the Science Guy YouTube video in class? Social media can be a great resource for gaining new information. Professionals often make videos and post blogs to share insight into their areas of expertise. Thanks to social media, when you have a question, your answer is just a few clicks away. But be carefulâ not everything that comes from social media is reliable. Donât trust one source without making sure it is credible, and don't be afraid to do more research on the topic if you arenât sure!
Creativity
Creativity can come from anywhere, but social media can be useful when you find yourself stuck. Social media allows you to get inspiration from other people and places. I canât tell you the number of times Iâve gone to TikTok or Pinterest to find a new recipe or makeup look because I wanted to try something new and couldn't come up with an idea as to how. Whether you are generating content or consuming it, social media allows everyone to express their creativity.
When used appropriately, social media can be a fun and interesting way to connect with others and expand your mind. It is a very useful outlet, but it can also be harmful. Make sure to monitor your screen time and try to steer clear of the negative side of the internet. Itâs okay to disconnect!
Be well, Auburn.
Writer
After getting her associate degree, Sophi transferred to Auburn Univerity to study Communications and English. She had been indifferent towards Auburn before, but after chanting Bodda Getta at football games and indulging in some Toomerâs lemonade, Sophi embraced the Auburn community with open arms. She plans to pursue a career in publishing as a book editor. Sophi is involved with the universityâs literary magazine, The Auburn Circle, on prose staff.
If you havenât guessed by now, Sophi is an avid reader who can talk for hours about her favorite books. She will recommend just about anything by Agatha Christie or Madeline Miller if you ask. When she doesnât have her nose stuck in a book, you can find her running or playing sand volleyball at The Rec, hanging out at her apartment with her roommates and friends, or playing the annoyingly addictive Block Blast game on her phone.
