A Reminder to Check in With Yourself

As the whirlwind of class, work, and quarantine continues, I find myself forgetting to do the simplest things for my well-being.

It’s easy to get caught up in work—I know, I do almost every day—so I put together a quick list of self-care reminders. I hope that referring to this list every now and then helps you to stay happy and healthy, just like it does for me.

Leave the PJ’s behind.

When I wake up in the morning and put on a new outfit, I feel extremely motivated and enthusiastic to work. Getting into this habit will change your attitude towards class and work completely.

Don’t skip on breakfast.

Waking up early and taking time to make yourself breakfast (even if it’s just fruit and toast) makes a clear difference in your day.

Click off of social media and on to LinkedIn.

Social media takes up a lot of our time. I have found that using my free time on social media for professional development is not only more fulfilling but is a better use of my time. Check out the news or LinkedIn to keep yourself up to date in your field.

Make your bed.

This is something I always thank myself for at the end of a long day. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

Take a walk.

Sometimes we overwork ourselves without realizing it. Setting a mid-day alarm to get some fresh air and light exercise will make you feel re-energized.

Drink more water.

Drinking water is so important for our mood and overall health, yet so many of us forget it. Finding a water bottle I love is what influenced me to drink more water.

Call your friends and family members.

With so much going on in my head, I sometimes forget that home is just a click away. Talking to your friends and family is a refreshing and must-needed break from it all.

Go to bed early.

After I get ready for bed, I like to unwind by checking social media. But let’s be honest, this usually leads to mindlessly watching TikToks until 1:00 a.m. I feel so much better in the morning waking up for class when I actually put my phone down.

Have a day to yourself.

You need it: do a face mask, start that movie or show you’ve wanted to see, and relax. Not every day has to be full of activity.

Actively including some of these tasks in my daily routine allows my productivity to skyrocket in school and work while staying sane. Although it’s sometimes hard to step away, taking a few short breaks throughout your day is more beneficial than you think.

Check in with yourself… and

Be well, Auburn.
