Dine and Dash: 4 Food Truck Favorites

Confession: I’ve never been one to eat at the food trucks on campus.

I know what you’re thinking. “What the truck?” Typically, I stay in my Chick-fil-A and Panera Bread comfort zone and only venture out for the occasional Einstein’s bagel. However, it became clear that I was missing out on some campus-favorite meals on wheels. I made it my mission to give them a chance.

Rice and Veggies from Hibachi Truck

Rice and vegetables are pretty straightforward — you either like them or you don’t. Fortunately for me, I could eat this combo all day long, and that’s exactly what I wanted to do when I tried this delicious lunch. In fact, since I first started writing this article, I’ve already been back to this truck twice (goodbye, Tiger Card money, I’ll miss you)!

Gyro Rice Platter from NYC Gyro Truck

I’ll admit that my Taziki’s bias was strong going into this one. I like what I know, and what I know is gyros. The first thing I saw on the menu was a gyro rice platter, and I ordered it solely based off of the gyro in the name — and it was very, very good. I got it with chicken, and the rice was to die for! If this were a ranked list, I think this would be the winner.

Burrito Bowl from the Amsterdam Taco Truck

I’m not the biggest fan of burrito bowls, as I prefer my burrito to have a tortilla, but I was more than impressed by the flavor of this delectable lunch. I got my bowl with chicken, black beans, and rice; I’ll be going back to the Amsterdam taco truck for another bowl very soon — in the name of research, of course.

Grilled Chicken Sandwich from Firetruck Bar-B-Que

I ended my experiment with the grilled chicken sandwich combo with mac and cheese. To me, it’s hard to mess up either of those items, and fortunately, Firetruck has it down to a science. The sandwich was really good, as was the mac and cheese; but if I’m being honest, I’ll probably stick with Chik-fil-A’s versions of both for the time being.

Overall, I’m very impressed by the diverse selection of foods our on-campus food trucks have to offer. I feel like I’ve introduced my taste buds to a whole new world of flavor, and this article was definitely worth writing, if only for the fact that I now have a much broader range of lunch options!

Be well, Auburn.

Born in Mobile, Alabama, Hannah’s decision to attend Auburn came as a nasty shock to her Alabama-loving family. They’ve since come around, though she suspects her mom will never remove her crimson license plate from her car. Hannah is a junior studying visual media and minoring in marketing, and, like her mom and her license plate, you’ll never see Hannah without her Canon in tow.

Hannah’s likes include her roommate’s homemade cookies, true crime podcasts, and Auburn Basketball. Besides The Rec, Hannah works as an extra on film and TV shows — she has played everything from an elf to a bomb victim, and her eternal fun fact is that she was in Stranger Things. Hannah’s dream is to one day make her own movies, and she’s already written her acceptance speech for Best Director at the Oscars.
