What Read Across America Day Means to Me

Today is Read Across America Day, and in its honor, I am reflecting on my return to reading. This seems like a common theme, but as a kid, I absolutely loved reading and there were never enough books. Somehow, over time, I became busier, and reading became less of a priority to me. Going into 2022, I decided to start reading again, and here are a few steps that helped me get started.

Good Reads

Downloading Good Reads was a great step because I love being able to see what my friends have been reading. I was then able to add their recommendations to the “Want to Read” section within the app. This feature is perfect when you’re on the search for your next book.

Good Reads also allowed me to set a goal of how many books I wanted to read this year. I’m goal-driven, so I really think that seeing progress throughout the year will encourage me to meet my goal. I focused on a goal that was realistic but also will push me to consistently read throughout the year.

Book Tok

“Book Tok,” or the section of Tik Tok where people talk about their favorite books, is a great resource to find the most popular reads. While this is a great place to find a few new books, I have tried my best to replace my nightly TikTok scrolling with reading. I find that if I don’t feel like focusing on reading, it’s probably time for me to go to sleep regardless.

While reading is beneficial, it can be an expensive hobby. I have a public library card, so I can still read without breaking the bank. Another alternative is getting a group of friends together that have similar reading interests, and trading books every few weeks so you don’t have to purchase every book you read. If you do plan on purchasing books in Auburn, it’s always nice to support local bookstores like Well Red or Auburn Oil Booksellers.

Reading is such a great way to spend some free time, and there is no better feeling than getting lost in a book.
