What Should be in Your gym Bag and Why
Most people remember their first time stepping foot in a gym.
Walking in with only a bottle of water and perhaps a friend, you nervously start testing all the equipment. As time goes on, the nerves fade and you decide to start bringing some gym essentials with you. In no time at all, your gym bag is so big that it looks like a turtle shell, and you can’t live without it.
Whether you are looking to add some items to the shell or you are just starting to build up your gym bag, the following items could be a great addition to your collection.
Pre-Workout
Pre-workout definitely isn’t for everyone, but if you find that by the time you get to the gym you are out of energy, pre-workout could definitely benefit you. Most of the time performance in the gym has a direct correlation to energy. Being tired vs. energized could be the difference between seeing minimal progress in the gym vs. maximal. It is always good to have the option of pre-workout in your gym bag just in case you are feeling drowsy.
Lifting straps
Lifting straps are an essential tool for most gym goers. Most people think that lifting straps are only useful for exercises like the deadlift. However, lifting straps are useful for any exercise where grip might be a limiting factor. Exercises like a lat pulldown can be much more effective with straps as the back can pull much more weight than the hands are comfortable holding. Using straps allows you to lift heavier and get more from the exercise as you get a better contraction in the target area.
Water Bottle
No explanation is needed. Hydrate.
Bands
Bands might win the award for the most versatile piece of gym equipment. A whole workout can be done just by using bands. A band's main purpose is for warming up or stretching. Next time you go to the gym, consider using some bands before your lifts, and you might notice a big difference.
Lifting Belt
A lifting belt is a tool that is more suitable for intermediate or advanced lifters. This is because before using a belt, technique and core stability should be developed over a long period of time. Once proper form/core strength has been achieved, it might be a good idea to get a belt.
Belts are mainly used for compound lifts like the squat, deadlift, or clean. Belts are used to help provide core stability and maintain proper form. Using a belt gives you something to brace your core against allowing you to be more stable and reducing the chances of injury.
Gym shoes
Proper gym shoes are a must. Showing up to the gym and realizing you don’t have the right shoes is a horrible feeling. Always be prepared with a good pair of tennis shoes or even a specialty shoe like a squat shoe or deadlift slipper.
Headphones
Behind the water bottle, headphones might be the second-most useful gym tool. Everyone knows that for the most part, gym playlists aren't the greatest, so bringing your own headphones is a must.
Next time you go to the gym, don’t forget your gym bag essentials, and
Be well, Auburn.
