A Guide to Recreation and Wellness’ Outdoor Facilities
The Auburn University Recreation and Wellness Center is widely considered to be one of the best additions to Auburn's small, yet hospitable campus.
The Recreation Center makes good use of its space, taking up 240,000 sq feet and including a ⅓ mile track, multiple basketball courts, Olympic powerlifting area, and enough machines to provide almost any exercise you can think of. While many consider Recreation and Wellness to be the heart of the university, some people don’t know of the other facilities offered outside of the main building.
SportsPlex
One prime example is the SportsPlex which consists of two baseball fields and three regular fields that can be used for football, soccer, baseball, rugby, etc. It is located at 811 Lem Morrison Drive behind fraternity row. Some people think that this area is a practice area for some of the university's teams, however, this space is in fact owned by Recreation and Wellness, and any student who wishes to use these fields can. Just remember to bring your Tiger Card to swipe in. The SportsPlex also hosts some tournaments, intercollegiate sporting events, and other special events, so make sure to check campusrec.auburn.edu/hours for information on when to go!
Tennis and Pickleball Courts
Recreation and Wellness also offers options for any tennis or pickleball players. Located at 901 West Thach Avenue next to RO parking, there are 11 tennis and 8 pickleball courts. These courts require no reservation, so just show up and play! For those who enjoy getting their exercise in late, the courts stay lit through all hours of the night, so the fun never stops!
Sand Volleyball Court
Another hidden gem Recreation and Wellness offers is sand volleyball. The center building (located to the right of the entrance) and the SportsPlex have sand volleyball courts that are always kept in pristine condition so you don’t have to worry about any trash or debris like you would have to at other outdoor locations. Recreation and Wellness is my favorite area to play because I can get a lift in after playing if I choose to do so.
These facilities can be great options for anyone who wants to get out and get active. I have personally been to the SportsPlex multiple times and visit the pickleball courts every week. The memories that I have made playing sports there with my friends have been some of my best at Auburn, and I highly encourage anyone who feels like getting active to visit these facilities!
Be well, Auburn!
